Voluntary Service

Image
As part of my school's TY programme you have to do voluntary work. I volunteer at the St. Vincent De Paul charity shop on Saturday mornings. Everyone at the shop is really nice and all the staff are very friendly. I normally work in the library, tidying bookshelves however sometimes I sort  out and price the clothes. It's a nice feeling to know that your helping those who are less fortunate than you in your community.

Trips

-My year went on an overnight trip to Delphi Adventure Centre in Mayo last October. We did lots of activities but my favourites were the midnight walk and the high ropes. Overall it was good fun. -My Spanish class went on a trip in December to the Irish Film Institute where we saw a Spanish film and then we went to a Spanish restaurant for tapas. -I went on a trip to the RDS in February with some female students from my school for a talk on promoting women in the STEM subjects. It was really good. -My History class went on a trip Kilmainham gaol in February. We got a free tour of the gaol which was really interesting. -My Law class went on a trip to the Dublin criminal courts of justice in March. We first met with a barrister who explained how the courts worked and we got to act out a mock trial in a courtroom. Then we got to sit in on a murder trial which was so interesting. -My Road Safety class went on a trip to the Leinster Driving campus in March where we each got 45 min

Subjects Term 2 & Leaving Cert Choices

Image
Subjects Term 2 In term 2 I took Cookery, Economics, Media Studies, Physics and Road Safety as my choice subjects. -Although I missed a lot of cookery classes, I really enjoyed it as it was so much fun learning how to make new things and getting to taste it afterwards😀. -I enjoyed learning about the market in Economics and it was a relaxing class. -I didn't enjoy media studies. We had to write an article every week which I found annoying. -Physics class was really good fun. We did practicals and experiments everyday which meant the class was never boring and always went very quickly. -I also really enjoyed Road Safety. It was really helpful learning the rules of the road ahead of my driving theory test and we watched really good videos.                     Leaving Cert Choices I found it difficult to choose what 3 subjects to do as there was so much choice. I chose Business, Music and Biology. I think I might change Biology to Religion but I'm worried

Work Experience 2

LETNS-23rd January 2017  I spent my third week at my old primary school Lucan Educate Together National School. I had to be there at 8:50 and I finished at 2:30. The school is right beside my estate so it was so easy getting there and back with only a quick walk. I loved the short working hours and it was great getting to experience the role of a primary school teacher however I didn't enjoy working with the children so I can't see myself pursuing this career in the future. eir-30th January 2017 I spent my fourth week with eir, an Irish sports, mobile and broadband telecommunications company. I was in their Office Headquarters up by Heuston station so it was handy just getting the bus up to Heuston. My hours were 10:00-4:00. I really enjoyed my week with eir. Everyone was so nice there. I sat in on meetings with the heads of different departments which was really interesting, I got to sit down with a graphic designer, I got see apps being made on different devices

Christmas Holidays & Projects vs Test Assessments

Image
Christmas Holidays During my Christmas Holidays I spent a lot of time with family and family friends, having dinner and going out with them. I got lots of presents and I really liked them all. I watched a lot of TV and Netflix over the break and I got to catch up on my favourite shows. I had a lovely Christmas and I felt really happy being able to relax over the break. Projects vs Test Assessments I prefer projects to tests because I can usually do research on something that interests me and produce the project in the format that I like whereas with a test I have to memorise things that don't always interest me.Tests normally help me to learn more on topics that don't interest me but that I need to know for the Leaving Cert. I did hand all my projects in on time however I found the last two weeks before Christmas to be really stressful and tiring trying to get them all done. I had to stay up late and get up early most days in order to get the projects finished on time

Subjects Term 1

Image
I took Geography, Computer Science, Law, Tourism and Spanish as my choice subjects in the first term. Every class lasted for a double class except for Law which was a triple on a Wednesday. -I didn't enjoy Geography because I felt that the class dragged on and I thought learning about development was boring. -I enjoyed computer science class as I learned a lot of useful computer skills and I found the class very relaxing. -My favourite subject was Law as I loved studying different cases, watching interesting documentaries, learning about the courts and learning different law terms. When I leave school I think I would be interested in getting a degree in law. -Although it was interesting learning about some of the Tourism definitions, I didn't enjoy the class. There was so much work to do that meant every class was a rush and there was a lot of theory to learn for the test. -I didn't enjoy Spanish as much as I thought I would because I found the language was quite

Work Experience 1

DSPCA-17th October 2016 I spent my first week of work experience at the DSPCA in the Dublin Mountains. I had to be there at 8:50 am every morning and I finished at 4:00 pm. The location of the shelter up in the mountains was awkward so there was no bus route going there and the country roads weren’t safe for walking along so I had to get a lift. The traffic was really bad on the M50 so I had to leave my house at 7:30 which meant I had to get up at 7:00. On Monday morning we were assigned our different jobs and units within the Shelter. Most people were sent to the Cattery and re-homing units however me and a friend got the hardest job being assigned to the isolation unit caring for sick and newborn animals. It was hard work cleaning out dirty cages but it was great fun playing with the animals. I really enjoyed my week there. Calendar Club-24th October 2016 I spent my second week working at the Calendar Club stall in Liffey Valley Shopping Centre. My hours were 11:00 till 4
